Time in Samos, Greece:

September is always a good idea

The guide for September 2024 from mySamos

Sometimes people try to figure out which is the best time to visit the island of Samos. But there is no such answer as Samos has different views at different times. September for example seems the ideal month for lots of people, making it the second most popular month of the year. The setting gets more quiet, the sun is not so hot, the seas are mostly calm and have been warmed the past three months. September is a great time to visit Samos.

So get your car or motor bike and enjoy this time. Below we share mySamos guide ideas to explore places and taste the beauty of the island.

Starting from Karlovasi, in September it is a wonderful idea to visit the wineries of the Union and Vakakis. The time of trygos has ended and now the work of the vines must starts to give us later the excellent Samos wines. Besides the tour at the wineries, Potami beach gets calm from the Augusts wild waves and the Potami Waterfalls path is a good idea, for those who like some adventure. Don’t miss Archodissa before you start your journey to the big waterfall. Nature is inviting and the temperature is ideal.

The market of Karlovasi and the city center are a choice for a stop while the port remains attractive for a drink in Charisma or a dinner at Kritamo. The ships from Piraeus and Turkey still dock on a daily basis bringing new travelers who will enjoy the island this month. When you seek fresh fish, do not forget the Psarades (Fishermen) tavern, in Kontakaiika and if you want a real village experience, visit Konteika square, Platanos or Lekka; traditions’s taste is the best.

Once in Kokkari, you love it forever.

Moving to Agios Konstantinos village, first check the upper part of the old village. A quick stroll is a deep dive in the originality of the old villages of the island. Then on the seaside of Agios, Balconi is there for your brunch or coffee, Aiolos for the fresh fish and the unique servings of seafood, while Fevgatos tavern is there for the traditional grill choices. Walk the village, talk to the fishermen and leave following the way to Manolates. A stop in Valeontades in Ithaki restaurant is a must. Either to taste something or to reserve for another time. Then “get lost” in the platans and vast green surrounding as you drive to Manolates. Four kilometers of beauty. This is the heart of Samos. In Manolates walk, walk and walk. Visit the village’s museum shop and meet interesting local people and why not stop for a coffee, drink or lunch in Despina or Kallisti.

Vourliotes, Ambelos and Stavrinides are also ideal to visit during September in Samos. Bu the destination you’d better not leave out of your list of cjoices is for sure METAXA LIKNON. This place is a unique experience. Taste the original Greek spirit, take the tour of how vineyard are cultivated and end up relaxing with on of the best views around the whole island. Bookings here.

What else? Vathy – Samos town. Yes, the capital city. Shopping, the 3rd largest port of Greece with a long promenade, the Wine Museum of the island, the Mayor’s house and the National Garden, the Archaeological Museum and the central Pythagoras square. The list gets bigger. Take a coffee at My House, eat a home made pie at Fyllo Fyllo, take the way to upper town (Pano Vathy) to Ourania’s tavern for the original cookings and then wait for the next day to see more around the city!

A day should be also spent in Pythagorio. The cosmopolitan village that was the ancient capital of the island, the place that took its name to honor the philosopher Pythagoras (Pitagoras), is the center for all the visitors and travellers. We could have started this article from here but no matter what you talk about Samos, Pythagorion is always the most attractive place and you don’t miss it! The archaeological museum together with the castle of Logothetis are the main attractions but don’t limit your tour in these two. Visit the Efpalinion tunnel, it is a miracle of antiquity and next to it, go to Spiliani Monastery, to see the cave and of course the view of Pythagorio from above. The shopping street has from handmade wooden pens made here in Samos (PENSART) to pieces of Greek artists (KALLISTI) and of course lots of other activities to do, things to see, etc, etc. Fishing Trips is a good idea that combines a boat trip to beautiful close destinations with fishing and a grill menu on the boat! After you do so many things around, check the list to eat and drink. Long list but really with mySamos selections. FAROS for fish. CENA for excellent mediterranean cuisine. ELIA for a guaranteed meal. AFRODITE for the famous chef’s cookings. ENHORIO for the place and the real Samian tastes. IRODION for the garden setting. Ice creams, cocktails, PERGAMONTO, Π2 and many others are good to know while TWO SPOONS is the most famous place when we talk about sugar and sweets.

Pythagoras village, main street.

Before you plan your next moves, consider e-Thagorion, the e-bike choice that will offer a different view around the village. Easily rent a bike and explore Potokaki beach, Chora, Ireon or any other place. The battery lasts enough to relax you but if you are a real athlete, combine your strength to count greater distances. Beach Volley in Potokaki or water sports at Doryssa hotel are good choices as well.

Next stop Ireon archaeological site and Ireon village. Then the villages around such as Pagondas, Spatharei and Pyrgos. Koumaradei is an essential stop on your tour either to taste Panorama’s village cookings (and the view) but also to shop traditional handmade goodies. Ceramics, loom products and herbs will fill your bags with aromas and a touch of Samos.

Village view plus airport view plus sea view, all from Panorama in Koumadei.

mySamos list never ends you know, so we continue to the last part of Samos, that especially during September is really nice to go. Koumeika square before you descend to Balos beach, is ideal for a coffee or mezes in Sfendamos. Ormos is nice in afternoon and early in the night. A real summer setting of a traditional fishing village of the Mediterranean. Fish taverns, CAVE for those who know it (do not hesitate to try it) and then Kampos, the seaside of Marathokampos village.

Did we miss some places? Mytilinii? Chora? Mykale? Ok, write to our Instagram @mysamos account which other places we would like to cover and trust mySamos guide – we have lots of places and things to suggest. Secret, unique, popular and more…

Tsamadou beach and Navagos Beach bar from above

September’s best beaches in Samos: all of them! We cannot exclude a single beach from our favorite beaches during this month. But, for your convenience and after you study the whole list of mySamos guide, we can suggest a few… Starting from the three northern beaches Tsabou, Tsamadou and Lemonakia, all are ideal to spend the day, enjoy the services of the organized beach bars and restaurants. Kokkari beach is right next to the street and has so many choices if you don’t really want to move at all from the village. When it comes to Vathy, Gagou beach is ok for the city but the real gem is Livadaki.

Kerveli, Klima, Posidonio; another set of three beaches that is hard to choose. Quiet setting, calm waters. Psili Ammos was the attraction of this summer. Between Noya, the beach bar and Psili Ammos tavern, the day worths to be spent here. Glicorissa, as we move closer to Pythagorio might become your favorite one, fully equipped and then the long beach of Doryssa Seaside Resort, next to the airport. The Beach Volley in Potokaki, right next to the attractive Casa Cook hotel, is available for some adrenaline and fun, while moving close to Ireon, the absolute choice is the unique setting of Pappa beach.

At the southwestern part of the island, not to be missed is Balos, where we suggest Princess Tia elegant beach bar and more western starts the ?Votsalakia (Kampos) beach with the numerous beach bars and taverns. Fresh fish, gourmet dishes, Lagoon beach bar to swim at one of the best parts of the sandy beach… and we end our beach trip with Psili Ammos and Limnionas, if your really want to see kilometers counting at your vehicle.

The beach volley in Potokaki. Fun on the seaside!
