During the times of Polykrates, the important works, which are referred by Herodotus, are, amongst others, the port of the city and the walls. The walls of the 6700 meters followed the perimeter of the city and today only a small part is preserved. The construction consists of big stone blocks, whereas in many spots there were towers, but only one is preserved today. The pier of the port (sea wall) was also a great and difficult project, which was admired by Herodotus, but today we have no trace of it. However, we know historically that today’s port partially follows the line of the ancient one. It had a depth of 35 meters and a length of approximately 300 meters.
